What Got Built This Week · September 4, 2026

The mainstream sports biz press spent the week explaining, for the eight-hundredth time, why the Seahawks are worth $9.6 billion. Meanwhile, Congress introduced a bill to regulate private equity in youth sports, Speedo finally shipped a connected-swim platform, and a federation-backed resale marketplace launched for endurance sports.

That’s the beat. Welcome to the first one.

The Cap Table

1. Congress introduces the Let Kids Play Act, and PE in youth sports finally has a federal target · Youth · Policy

The Let Kids Play Act, introduced this week, is the first federal bill to name private-equity roll-ups in youth sports as the target. Legislators pegged the youth sports economy at $40B and framed pay-to-play as a market-structure problem, not a values one. Hmmm.

I’ve been writing about this dynamic for a while (the piece I published in July on the same topic sits here on Substack). What’s new this week is federal air cover. If you’re building, following, or just interested in youth sports (travel leagues, tournament operators, facility groups, coaching platforms, streaming, recruiting tech, and on and on and on), a federal bill signals that the acquisition curve of the last five years has crested into political territory. Nothing passes this Congress. But the Overton window moved. The next round of PE roll-up decks will need a “regulatory posture” slide, and LPs will start asking questions they weren’t asking twelve months ago.

The tell: the bill dropped in the same week SBJ published “The EBITDA churn trap”, a piece arguing the best-looking youth-sports assets carry hidden discounts because their revenue is churn-dependent. Regulators reading that piece just got a data point. Buyers just got a discount lever.

2. Speedo launches Speedo iQ, and swim finally gets a connected-tech layer · Wearables · Youth

Speedo shipped Speedo iQ, a connected swim-tech platform, this week. The swim-tech gap is filling fast with the launch of this product, ZWIM, and eo Swim Better, and my read hasn’t changed: swimming was the last major youth-and-endurance category without a real data layer. Cycling has Zwift and Wahoo. Running has Strava, Garmin, and Avelo. Triathlon has TrainingPeaks (recently snapped up by Garmin). Swimming had a pace clock and a printed set list on a whiteboard.

Full disclosure: I swim in FORM goggles, which is the other serious player in this category and has a two-year software head start. Speedo owning the connected layer for a sport it already dominates in equipment is the platform play that only makes sense if the incumbent moves first. They finally did. What FORM does in response is the more interesting question. They have the better product; Speedo has the better distribution. That gap is where the next round of positioning gets decided.

3. Momento launches Venue Vision, the fan-data play for the sponsor side · Platforms · B2B

Momento launched Venue Vision, a fan-data platform for venue operators. The category is crowded (Satisfi, Greenfly, Elevate, Fevo all have adjacent plays). What sets Momento apart: the pitch isn’t about fan engagement; it’s venue-side operational data. The sponsor-facing “here’s what your activation actually did” layer that most rights-holders still handle with a spreadsheet and a slide deck. Aaron Duckmanton at Everton called this the “trading mindset” earlier this year. Momento is trying to be the receipts.

4. Kit Revolution and British Triathlon launch KitHub, resale infrastructure comes to endurance · Endurance · Marketplaces

British Triathlon and Kit Revolution launched KitHub, a marketplace for pre-loved and surplus gear. Federation-endorsed resale is an interesting play in endurance. Every cyclist (yours truly included), triathlete, and federation has at least $3K of unused gear in a garage; anyone interested in Assos or Cuore USA Cycling team kits? The friction in selling it has been the entire problem; eBay and Facebook Marketplace have become a scammers' paradise. Federation seal of approval solves trust, discoverability, and sizing anxiety in one move. The category question: who in the U.S. copies this first? USA Cycling, or a direct-to-athlete platform that goes around the federation entirely?

5. Russell Westbrook joins Project B as co-founder and investor;

The athlete-as-operator move continues. SBJ.

Fumbles & Vaporware

Rug Pull. Dude Perfect lost its CEO this week, less than two years after the Highmount Capital raise that was supposed to turn a YouTube channel into a media company. Turns out sports IP built for algorithms is hard to convert into a franchise the way private-equity models say it should convert.

Beta Blocker. Good Good Golf is still handling last month’s crisis badly, per a crisis-comms expert quoted in Insider Sport this week. When the expert is on the record saying you’re doing it wrong, you’ve graduated from a PR problem to a business-model problem.

TAM Fam. Sports fans, per SBJ this week, are drawing the line on AI-generated content. Every “AI-powered sports content” deck raised in the last 18 months just got a new slide it doesn’t want to write.

Signal Check

U.S. sports participation just hit an all-time high, led by two sports most sports-tech decks don’t include.

The SFIA 2026 report came out this week. Flag football and padel drove participation to a record. Neither sport has meaningful native tech infrastructure in the U.S. No dominant scheduling platform, no dominant tournament OS, no dominant coaching app, no wearable partnership. If you’re a builder scanning for whitespace, this is your whitespace. Padel especially: courts are being built faster than the software layer that runs them. The category is currently served by European platforms (Playtomic, MATCHi) that don’t understand American club economics. That will not stay true.

Who’s Building

Check out what Patrick Morris is building in SPOT SPORTS. This has potential and has me hooked since Autograph.io went down like Tom Brady being sacked by Von Miller.
I’ve gone down the rabbit hole searching Neil Horowitz’s Skipper platform and finding all sorts of juicy information.
The 20th Annual TOUR OF THE CATSKILLS is coming back as a 3-day stage race in 2027. This was one of my favorite events in its first few years before it moved to a gran fondo format (which I still rode, and loved). Dieter Drake can’t get enough of the race directing biz, and I’m here for it all!
Royi Metser and Peter Ruppe have built the Avelo running shoe that I absolutely love to run in, oh, and it has a wearable sensor in the footbed that gives me all sorts of interesting data about how slow and inefficient I am at plodding around the block.

Overheard

“Every media company says it wants an AI strategy. Then you ask where its metadata lives, and the room goes quiet.”

Forwarded this week by a communications executive working with broadcasters and media-tech companies ahead of IBC.

The near-term AI land grab in media may have less to do with models than with the disorder underneath them: decades of video, audio, rights data, clips, archives, and production assets that nobody can reliably search, classify, reuse, or monetize. AI is becoming the sales pitch; metadata remediation is increasingly the actual work.

The companies that make the invisible library visible and turn it into revenue, rather than merely a better internal search bar, will have a far more durable position than those simply adding “AI-powered” to the deck.

Look for Eon Media and Ashish Agrawal (I’m an Advisor) at the IBC Show in Amsterdam next week.

Full disclosure: I advise and invest across sports-tech, media, youth sports, endurance, and wearables. When B&P covers a company I’m involved with, I’ll note it in the item.

This is Issue 001. Format will settle in the first three issues. Feedback welcome; this is a build in public.
